Superstite

Superstite takes its name from the Latin superstes: to stand over, to survive. In "Superstite," a field of 17 light-sensitive resistors floats on small disks in a tank of murky, wave-disturbed water. As the sensors drift above and below the waterline, changes in light affect their "resistance," which opens or closes access to 30 archival audio recordings. These recordings contain voices and fragments of belief from palm readers, shamans, psychics, astrologers, and tarot readers encountered in New York City. Visitors can intervene directly by covering sensors with their hands or bodies, altering the system in real time. The installation behaves like superstition itself—oscillating between logic and intuition, visibility and disappearance, belief and disbelief. Superstite takes its name from the Latin superstes: to stand over, to survive.
